The beat of the drum has an almost magical effect on people. Nobody can resist tapping their foot along to the beat of a good drummer. This musical instrument can set the tempo and pace of any song although classical music fans will argue it is the piano.

This instrument has been with humans since the dawn of time and is still very popular. The reason why this instrument has survived throughout time is the simplicity of it. Anyone can pick up a drum and beat out a rhythm. The difference between a skilled drummer and someone who is just playing is that the skilled drummer can keep a steady beat.

Types Of Drums

Drums come in many different shapes and sizes and are used to produce various different sounds. Some are played using the foot, others use the hands. Then there is the type that is most iconic today, the one that uses the sticks!

Some of the most commonly used are:

*Bongo - These are native to Cuba but can now be found all over the world. *Ashiko - These are found in Africa and are played with the bare hand. *Snare - Very popular, often played with either sticks or brushes. *Drum Kit - This is the rock band's version, usually consisting of several various types along with cymbals.

Learning To Play

Learning to play well can take many years. As all musical instruments, learning drums takes practice. It is definitely an instrument that you should have a lot of space to play. The neighbors probably wouldn't appreciate hearing you practice again and again. Luckily there are many kits available that can aid you to learn to play.

If you are more of a direct learning style person, why not search for a tutor. There are many resources online that can help you to find an instructor in your area. If you prefer, visit your local music store and ask there. Lessons are not usually expensive and many instructors have drum that you can use. This saves you having to buy your own before you try them.

When looking for a teacher, remember that there are many different styles of playing. Pick the style you want, whether that is traditional tribal or the rock star kit. This will help to avoid any confusion at a later date.

Having Fun

The most important thing to remember is that the instruments are there to help you have fun. You should take your lessons seriously but remember, you don't become a rock star overnight.
