It is important to understand your emotional intelligence competencies and learn how you can improve them, in order to be a successful business leader. Your emotional intelligence (also known as EQ) is based on four areas as identified by EQ researcher and author Daniel Goleman: Self Awareness Self Management Social Awareness Relationship Management Effective Communication Once you have an awareness of the EQ emotional intelligence core areas, you can begin to analyze and understand how you interact with others and how those interactions can be improved. Emotional intelligence involves being personally aware of your surroundings, learning styles, behavioral preferences and interactions. Everyone in your workplace has their own preferences when it comes to understanding and applying these four areas. Luckily, for those who have a difficult time adapting, analyzing themselves or letting go of personal workplace preferences, emotional intelligence skills can be learned and retained for long periods of time. Working closely with business leaders and executives and coaching them about emotional intelligence is the key to gaining effective communication and fostering a successful work environment.
